Pages and design
Guide, chapter 5~/guide/pages
Adding and moving pages
- Go to a page by clicking it in the Pages pane, or with Page Up and Page Down. Home and End go to the first and last page.
- Add a page: Insert > Page. Insert Blank Page (Ctrl+Shift+N) adds an empty one, Insert Duplicate Page copies the current page, and Insert Page asks how many and where.
- Right-click a page in the Pages pane to insert, duplicate, delete, move or rename it, change its master page or background, or start a new section.
- Delete, Move and Rename are also on the Design tab.
View > Two-Page Spread shows facing pages side by side, the way a booklet or newsletter opens. Single Page shows one at a time.
Page size, margins and orientation
The Page Setup group on the Design tab has:
- Size: the common paper and publication sizes. Create New Page Size sets your own.
- Orientation: portrait (tall) or landscape (wide).
- Margins: the margin guides on every page. Custom Margins sets exact amounts. Margins are guides only: objects can still go past them.
Master pages
A master page holds what repeats on many pages, such as a logo, a border, page numbers or a footer. Anything on it shows on every page that uses it, and you change it in one place.
- Open it: Design > Master Pages > Edit Master Pages, or Ctrl+M.
- Add what should repeat. The Master Page tab has Insert Page Number, Insert Date and Insert Time, and Show Header/Footer.
- Close Master Page (or Ctrl+M again) to go back to your pages.
The Master Page tab can also add more master pages, duplicate, rename or delete them, and make a two-page master for facing pages. Apply To chooses which pages use which master. On a page, Design > Master Pages > None turns its master off.
Headers, footers and page numbers
- Insert > Header and Footer open the master page at the top or bottom, so what you type shows on every page.
- Insert > Page Number places a page number in the corner you choose, on the master page. Insert Number of Pages adds the total, for "Page 3 of 8".
- Format Page Numbers sets the number style (1, i, A) and where numbering starts. Show Page Number on First Page leaves the cover unnumbered when it's off. Remove Page Numbers takes them all out.
- Sections, from the right-click menu in the Pages pane, let numbering start again partway through.
Colour schemes and font schemes
A colour scheme is a set of colours that a template and its parts use. Pick another one in the Schemes group on the Design tab and the whole publication changes colour together. Create New Color Scheme makes your own. Colours you pick from a scheme follow it when it changes; colours you pick by hand stay as they are.
A font scheme does the same for the heading and body fonts: Design > Fonts.
Page background
Design > Background gives the page a solid colour, a gradient or texture (More Backgrounds), or a picture (Apply Image). Apply to All Pages uses the same background everywhere.
Changing to another template
Design > Change Template moves your text and pictures into a different template's design. Anything that has no place in the new design waits in the Spare Items pane, where you can insert it on the current page or delete it.
Ready-made parts
The Ready-Made Parts group on the Insert tab adds finished pieces of design: Page Elements (headings, pull quotes, sidebars, stories and tables of contents), Calendars, Borders & Ornaments, and Advertisements. Pick one and it lands on the page, ready to edit.
To keep a design of your own for later, select it and use Add Selection to the gallery at the bottom of the matching menu, or right-click it > Save as Ready-Made Part. Your saved parts then appear in that menu in every publication.
Business Details Pro
Business Details keeps your name, job title, organisation, address, phone, email, tagline, website and logo in one place. Insert > Business Details adds any of them to the page, and templates fill them in for you. Edit Business Details changes them, and you can keep more than one set, such as one for work and one for a club. Business information on every page shows the set you choose.
